Olivia left the series after her character developed tuberculosis and entered a sanitarium. Richard Thomas became a nationally recognized actor through his portrayal of John-Boy Walton, a part fashioned after the real life of Earl Hamner. Richard Thomas is still using a walking stick, and again mentions a motorcycle.
Thomas is the only Walton kid to have a successful acting career after the show. In 1972, Richard won an Emmy for Best Actor in a Dramatic Series.

“Working as a team with the actors and crew to bring together a PBS production is rewarding, and I especially am happy when an actor likes their costume, and the costume helps them find the character they are playing,” she said.After many years, Richard Thomas, mostly remembered for his "John Boy" coming of age role in the 1970s CBS drama "The Waltons," featured as a narrator in "The Waltons: Homecoming." Railsback enjoyed going on location in western Kansas to film the attack scenes on the site where they actually occurred. “I enjoy seeing all of the behind-the-scenes preparations and working with all of the people who make everything happen.” A step back in time “Co-costuming the PBS documentary has been an exciting new adventure for me, as most of my experience is with live theater,” Railsback said.
